Segmental Retaining Wall
A segmental retaining wall (SRW) is a gravity retaining wall that rely primarily on their mass (weight) for stability. The system consists of concrete masonry units which are placed without the use of mortar (dry stacked), and which rely on a combination of mechanical interlock and mass to prevent overturning and sliding. Most manufacturers employ a system of heavy duty fiberglass pins to lock units into one massive wall structure. Cap stones are then attached with construction adhesive.
The units may also be used in combination with horizontal layers of soil reinforcement which extend into the backfill to increase the effective width and weight of the gravity mass.
Benefits of utilizing SRWs include:
Design Flexibility - The SRW system is composed of units whose size and weight makes it possible to construct walls in the most difficult of locations. Curves and other unique layouts can be easily accommodated. Segmental retaining walls have the ability to function equally well in large-scale applications (highway walls, bridge abutments, erosion control, parking area supports, etc.) as well as smaller residential landscape projects.
Ease of Installation - Most SRW units can be placed by a single construction worker. The dry stack method of laying units without mortar allows erection of the wall to proceed rapidly.
Aesthetics - Since SRW units are available in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures and colors, segmental retaining walls provide designers and owners with both an attractive and a structurally sound wall system. available in a variety of sizes, shapes, textures and colors, segmental retaining walls provide designers and owners with both an attractive and a structurally sound wall system.

My wife and I needed an an additional stone patio on our river property. The patio would need to be constructed on a hill side with access concerns, able to withstand large powerful storms and blend in with the house and existing patio. Reed Landscape Irrigation, LLC responded quickly with a design and cost proposal that addressed all our concerns and within a week mobilize. During construction, the work crew was professional and upon completion clean up the site of all debris and restored any damage to the property. We could not be any happier with the results and the project met the schedule and the cost proposal.

Reed Landscape has decades of experience installing Segmental Retaining Walls. We use products manufactured by Belgard and Versa-Lok. The durability of these wall systems cannot be matched. Since the units are dry-stacked, minor movements of the earth will not disturb the wall's integrity, as they are designed to allow for a bit of 'flex'. Give us a call today if you think your property could be improved with the addition of a retaining wall built using segmental blocks.
